Letter from DEC to Cobleskill Stone

The following letter (dated Feb. 26, 2007) was sent from DEC to John Holmes, attorney for CSP and Paul Griggs,  consulting geologist for CSP.

We place it on the SOS site (1) because it suggests that DEC listened to one of the repeated complaints at its public comment meeting,  and (2) to inform folks that the Griggs-Lang website -- if they followed DEC's directive -- now lets a visitor to the site copy or print any portion of CSP's DEIS.

Dear Sirs:

Please provide four (4) copies of the approved DEIS for the Schoharie Quarry Expansion project to Division of Environmental Permits Sub-Office in Stamford by Tuesday, February 27, 2007.

In addition, please remove the copying and printing locks on the Schoharie Quarry DEIS materials posted on the Griggs-Lang website by 12:00 pm, Tuesday, February 27, 2007.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this request.

Sincerely,

Kent Sanders
Deputy Regional Permit Adm
Region 4 - Stamford

DEC Accepts CSP Application as Complete

NYSDEC issued a "notice of completion" for CSP's permit application to expand the Schoharie quarry on Wednesday, January 31st. A 30 day period for public comment was also announced. This may be extended to 90 days if it is requested by the Town or SOS.

The DEIS is available at http://griggs-lang.net/schoharie

The DEIS is quite deficient in a number of areas - the issues of fugitive dust and blast impact, to name only two. The former is quite important because of health issues. High silica content in the gravels quarried here have been identified by reputable scientific studies as a carcinogen. We are exposed to this dust daily through all aspects of CSP's operation from blasting through crushing to the constant truck traffic .This really is something for all of us to not only think about, but to do something about. One thousand children may be exposed to danger on a daily basis at Schoharie Central.

You will also notice that the major revision and downsizing of the proposal announced with great fanfare by CSP last summer has been quietly scrapped. This means that the relocation of Rickard Hill road is out, but the tunnel under the road is back in complete with all the machinery and dust. Also remember that CSP has proposed bringing in a second stone crusher. I wonder what happened to the "compromise" that was put forward last summer!

SOS is assembling a team of independent, objective experts to provide assessments of the DEIS on our behalf to NYSDEC on all issues. Just as important, however, is having Village and Town residents let NYSDEC know they are opposed and why.

SOS will be in touch with you and also post on this Website information about who to write, where they are located and suggestions about what to include in a letter or email.

Dam Concerned Citizens played a critical role in forcing New York City and Schoharie County officials to take action on the Gilboa Dam. We can do the same thing and achieve the same result over quarry expansion - another threat to the lives and property of the citizens of Schoharie.

Revised Proposal

Have Your Say!
The Town's Land Use Law is what legally protects residents of Schoharie from further quarry expansion outside of pre-existing zones.  Quarries will undoubtedly apply pressure to the Town to alter or do away with this legislation.

Let Schoharie Board members know that you expect them to honor this law, nine years in the making, in full. You may email them at . . .
